Introduction

Thank you for using PowerSNMP for .NET. Designed for SNMP novices as well as experts, we hope you’ll agree that PowerSNMP puts the “simple” back into the Simple Network Management Protocol.

This product gives you all the tools you need to compose and interpret SNMP packets. Provided as .NET components and classes, PowerSNMP for .NET starts where commercial off-the-shelf products leave off. You can build practically any kind of SNMP application within the .NET framework.

This product supports:

SNMP version 1, 2 and 3 with authentication, encryption/decryption,
Built-in objects, identifiers, traps, tables, notifications, and groups as defined in RFCs 1155, 1157, 1158, 1213, 2578, 2579, 3417 and 3418,
MIB parsing, where any custom MIB file can be used to generate C# or VB classes in source code, and
MIB compiling, where any custom MIB file can be used to generate dynamic classes and objects at run-time.

To get started, you may want to compile and run the included .NET samples. To learn more about how SNMP works, please continue reading the following sections.

The scope of this documentation and product samples illustrates some common SNMP usage scenarios, but SNMP communications can be more complex. This product can be used to implement the most complex of SNMP communications, but such scenario descriptions may fall beyond the scope of this documentation. For learning advanced usage we recommend SNMP, SNMPv2, SNMPv3, and RMON 1 and 2, Third Edition, by William Stallings and published by Addison-Wesley.
